A word from a Hanover Toastmasters member

March 17, 2008

Here’s a bit about what our members are saying. If you haven’t visited a Toastmasters club, what are you waiting for? It’s the perfect place to improve your fear of public speaking!

“Joining Hanover Toastmasters was the best decision I made to enhance my public speaking abilities. I realized after my first meeting that the members are truly passionate about helping and supporting each other to reach new heights with their public speaking abilities. If you have thought about joining a toastmasters and/or want to improve your public speaking skills this is the group for you. Come check us out as a guest to see for yourself what we are all about.” – Jennifer Kauffman, ActionCoach.

Our next meeting is tonight March 17, 6pm. If you can’t make it tonight, then join us on Monday April 7, 6pm. We look forward to seeing you at a meeting soon!

Toastmasters to Improve Communication

October 9, 2007

I believe communication is a key component to healthy living. Whether with your family, work colleagues, clients or yourself, communication is a daily activity. There are a variety of ways to help improve communication skills, and for many people joining a club can offer support, encouragement and motivation. Toastmasters is a great organization for all of those things.

Two and a half years ago I was introduced to Toastmasters by my husband Michael. I had no idea what the group was about, what they did or how they were run. I only knew it had to do with public speaking. I pictured a group of executives in suits, speaking with grace and ease. An intimidating image to say the least. I was hesitant, but joined my husband anyway. After 2 guest visits, I decided to join the group in order to improve my speaking skills.

In the two and half years since I’ve been a Toastmaster my skills have changed dramatically. Am I perfect? Absolutely not! I still have plenty of room to improve. Even the best of the best are constantly working to improve their skills. Toastmasters works if you put the effort in.

That’s not to say I don’t get nervous when I have to speak. The difference is that now I know how to manage the fear. I know the importance of preparation and practice. And I know that each opportunity to speak is a chance to improve. To learn. It’s a safe environment with members who offer encouragement and feedback. It’s also an opportunity to hone your leadership skills by being an active member, a mentor or a club officer.

LEARN MORE
Not all clubs are the same. If you are interested in learning more visit the Toastmasters International website to find a club in your area. Most clubs will welcome visitors as long as it’s open to the public (there are some closed, business clubs). There is no fee or obligation to join if you attend as a visitor. If you decide to join there is a minimal dues cost involved (most clubs I know are under $100 for the year). Visit several clubs in your area before deciding to join to make sure you are joining a club that is the best fit for you.

Can’t find a club near you or visited a few and didn’t feel a connection to the members? No problem. Simply contact someone at the Toastmasters organization to find out how to start a new club. There are new clubs starting all the time.

Are you a Toastmaster? What has your experience been?

Not a Toastmaster and have questions about the organization – ask me! I’m happy to answer any questions.
